How Ghostit Made Its First Dollar

Content and Coffee Podcast

This is a tribute to Rahul's hustling abilities.

Here’s some backstory if you don’t know what Ghostit does yet. Ghostit's service provides an automated online presence for small to medium-sized. Similar to Buffer or Hoosuite, we provide a social scheduling tool that unlike Buffer or Hootsuite, self-fills with strategized, and original content.

We have come a long way since making our first dollar, click here to find out how we drove an additional $71,050 in additional revenue using Ghostit.

Our Process

A content marketing strategy is created customized to the needs of your business, and our in-house writers create your content. Once the blogs, social posts, and newsletters are created and edited, the content gets uploaded to your account on the Ghostit platform which then posts automatically for you.

So, if you need a blog, social posts, or Email newsletters, and you don't want to write it yourself, Ghostit is a service that takes care of all that by automating the whole process.

As Rahul says,

“It’s as hands on or hands off as you like”

Originally, we found that there are tons of pieces of software out there that can enable you to send better emails, or schedule all your social posts, or even write SEO driven content. But none of these software satisfies the actual writing of the content. What if businesses were too busy, or don’t know how to create quality content?

The Story

It was almost two years ago when our idea of a self-filling Hootsuite for social posts was conceived.  At the time we didn’t have the capacity to think of blog posts or newsletters, It was purely Facebook, Twitter, and Linkedin posts. What Rahul and I quickly figured out was without any calls to action, essentially the social posts were only saying “look at me look at me” without any other direction. That gap lead us into thinking about supplying the strategy piece of our offering, as well as blog posts and email newsletters. Now with the strategy businesses were no longer just saying “look at me look at me,” they were telling their audience to take action, which ultimately boils down to increasing their revenue, expanding their email lists or generating signups for their services.

To validate the idea, I basically I walked into ten different business, and said, “would you pay me one hundred dollars a month to manage your Facebook page.” Bold, but it worked. I had massive positive responses that essentially went “Yes of course! I don’t have time to do that.” Looking back, what I failed to do was actually get a commitment on that.

A month into the inception of the idea, Rahul and I joined forces and he became my co-founder. Not only was he constantly hustling, but he had amazing operational experience which I thought could bring a lot of value to Ghostit.

We sat down, chatted, and signed our contract becoming co-founders. At the time Rahul owned a Nando's Chicken and there was a lot of traffic coming through Nando’s doors, many of them small business owners. One of his customers ran an insurance brokerage where Rahul had his car insured so as they chatted, Rahul brought up Ghostit to the insurance brokerage and received very positive response along the lines of;

“Man this is awesomeam like I didn't know this service existed!”

Rahul went on to explain how our fledgling company could provide them value, get them on brand, and increase their local social presence by automating the process for their office.

Our initial package cost $300 a month and consisted of 30 social posts, 2 blog posts and maybe a newsletter. I don't recall the specifics but I remember it being an insane amount of content for a very low price. We were ambitious and were testing out our pricing.

Rahul booked us meeting and we went in and pitched Ghostit to two women who ran the office administration. We told them who we were, how we could help them, and that we had already approached the owner. Which resulted in our first contract! They said yes, on the spot and we signed the papers and moved forward.

Our first client thanks to Rahul hustling!

Ironically, we found out pretty quickly that quality content production was pricey, and our initial price point was too low so we ended up losing money. Even so, it was the best feeling. Ghostit has dramatically evolved from our humble beginnings but we have always stuck to our initial core idea and have only continually improved since then.
